During a hygiene appointment the dentist will thoroughly clean the teeth of plaque, calculus (hardened plaque or 'tartar'), and remove surface staining. Gums will be checked for gingivitis or periodontitis (gum disease), and the mouth checked for signs of other diseases such as oral cancer.
Our dentist will also work with you to show you how to most effectively clean your teeth, and may give you advice on which dental products to use to make your job easier and more effective. They may also recommend some diet or lifestyle changes to help maintain good oral health.
At regular recall visits (usually 6 monthly), the hygiene appointment is also coupled with a periodic examination. Our dentist will perform a thorough check-up of the teeth and dental restorations, with the aim of identifying problems early before they become major issues. Radiographs (X-rays) may be required to aid with this process.
Detection of a problem does not always mean that dental treatment is needed - the solution may be as simple as a change in daily cleaning procedures, or the use of professionally recommended products to control areas that have very early decay or are at greater risk of decay.
Regular recall visits are important for the maintenance of good oral health and the prevention of dental problems such as decay and periodontal (gum) disease. Depending on your individual needs, it is recommended that most people have periodic examinations every 6 to 12 months. A periodic examination is usually incorporated into a hygiene appointment, so that your mouth is checked and your teeth cleaned in one convenient appointment.
Our practice philosophy involves a commitment to the establishment and maintenance of healthy mouths, and a preventive approach to the control of all forms of oral problems. Regular hygiene and examination appointments are integral to the achievement of these goals.
